TO
SUFFER THE WALTZ is my new four character, full-length play about F. Scott and
Zelda Fitzgerald. It shows how the love
of F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald survived despite multiple debilitating
horrors.
The
play centers on a psychiatrist’s office, where the characters try to determine
whether Zelda can be discharged from the mental institution. From there the action bursts forth into
satellite scenes which dramatize the couple’s successes, their overindulgences,
their illnesses, and their tragedies—but mostly their enduring love for each
other.
The
two non-major characters (the psychiatrist and his secretary) also portray
Ernest Hemingway, Scott’s mistresses, Zelda’s lover, and her parents.
